The South Australian government has committed $44 million in the 2025-26 State Budget to fund a new state-of-the-art coastal research vessel.
This 37.7-metre vessel is designed to support a wide range of marine research activities, including fisheries, aquaculture, climate science, and oceanography.

Equipped with advanced sensors and technology, the vessel will play a crucial role in collecting critical data to address known gaps in national databases and enhance oceanographic forecast models. Notably, it will assist in monitoring and responding to significant marine events, such as the harmful algal bloom currently affecting South Australia's coastline.

The vessel's capabilities include deploying and maintaining coastal observing platforms, such as moorings equipped with sensors designed to detect harmful algal blooms. This functionality is expected to guide effective response strategies and mitigate the impact of such events on the marine environment and associated industries.

For stakeholders in the marine finance sector, this investment underscores the importance of supporting initiatives that enhance marine research and environmental monitoring. Such advancements can lead to more sustainable marine industries and inform better decision-making for businesses and consumers alike.
