For buyers, that can make the showroom feel more attractive than it did during the tight-supply years, when wait times and limited stock gave sellers more pricing power.

The important point is that a lower sticker price does not automatically mean a lower total cost. A discounted vehicle may still be paired with a loan that includes establishment fees, monthly account charges, early repayment conditions or a longer term that reduces the monthly repayment while increasing the interest paid over time. This is where car finance needs to be assessed as part of the whole purchase, not as an afterthought.

This development also extends the broader shift we have been watching in vehicle affordability. Earlier signs of softer used-car pricing gave buyers more room to compare age, kilometres and warranty cover. Now, stronger new-car offers may encourage some households to reconsider whether a new vehicle, demonstrator model or near-new used car provides the better long-term outcome.

For borrowers with strong credit, stable income and a suitable deposit or trade-in, a more competitive new-car market may create useful negotiating room. For self-employed applicants or buyers with past credit issues, preparation remains just as important. Lenders will still assess income evidence, existing commitments, credit history and the vehicle being financed, regardless of how attractive the advertised deal looks.

The takeaway is simple: discounts are helpful, but finance structure matters. A slightly smaller repayment can be appealing, especially while household budgets are under pressure, but the better decision is usually the one that balances price, rate, fees, flexibility and total interest. Buyers who slow down, compare carefully and stress-test affordability are better placed to turn a new-car promotion into genuine value rather than a longer, costlier commitment.
