Why ATO Interest Changes Matter for Small Business Finance

Tax debt is becoming a more expensive working capital problem for Australian SMEs

Why ATO Interest Changes Matter for Small Business Finance?w=400

Australian small businesses carrying tax debt face a sharper cash flow test as the after-tax cost of ATO interest becomes harder to absorb.
From the 2025-26 income year, general interest charge and shortfall interest charge amounts incurred on tax debts are no longer deductible.
For SMEs that have relied on payment plans as a temporary buffer, the change makes delayed tax payments more expensive in real terms.

The practical issue is not just the ATO rate itself. It is the way non-deductible interest competes with wages, supplier payments, rent, stock purchases and loan repayments. A business that previously treated ATO interest as an unfortunate but manageable cost may now need to reassess whether carrying tax debt is still cheaper than arranging structured working capital finance.

This extends the pressure we have previously examined around cash flow discipline. When margins are thin, directors can quickly lose optionality if tax liabilities are allowed to build. The longer a debt remains unresolved, the more difficult it can become to present a clean finance application, especially where bank statements show repeated ATO debits, overdue obligations or irregular repayment behaviour.

For business owners, the key response is to compare the full cost of each option, not simply the headline rate. A short-term business loan, line of credit or invoice finance facility may appear more expensive at first glance, but the comparison should include tax treatment, repayment flexibility, fees, security requirements and the effect on future borrowing capacity. Owners should also model repayments under conservative revenue assumptions before replacing one liability with another.

There are several practical steps SMEs can take now:

  • Keep tax accounts reconciled monthly rather than waiting for BAS or year-end work.
  • Speak with an accountant early if GST, PAYG withholding or income tax instalments are likely to fall behind.
  • Review whether existing overdrafts, credit cards or unsecured facilities are being used for the wrong purpose.
  • Prepare updated management accounts before approaching lenders, as recent and reliable figures can improve assessment quality.
  • Avoid applying to multiple lenders at once without a clear strategy, as this can create unnecessary credit file activity.

The broader lesson is that tax debt is no longer just an administrative issue. It is a funding decision with direct implications for affordability, lender confidence and business resilience. SMEs that act early are more likely to preserve choice, negotiate from a stronger position and avoid turning a temporary cash flow gap into a long-term finance constraint.

Canstar’s latest personal loan coverage is a useful reminder for Australians planning a lifestyle purchase: the cheapest-looking loan is not always the lowest-cost option once fees, loan terms and repayment flexibility are considered. While the guidance is written for personal loans broadly, it has clear relevance for buyers considering jetski loans, especially when a personal watercraft is being financed outside a dedicated marine loan. - read more

Why Towing Safety Should Shape Your Caravan Buying Budget
25 Jul 2026: Paige Estritori
Recent towing-safety coverage across Australia’s motoring media is a useful reminder that choosing a caravan is not only about layout, appliances and off-grid features. For buyers planning to finance a new or used van, the safety numbers can be just as important as the purchase price. A caravan that looks affordable on paper may still become a poor fit if it pushes a tow vehicle beyond its practical limits or forces costly upgrades after settlement. - read more
