For families and retirees planning long trips, the ready-to-travel figure may be more useful than the showroom price.

Before paying a deposit, buyers should ask for plate details, tare weight, ATM, GTM and towball mass in writing, then compare those numbers with the tow vehicle’s handbook and manufacturer limits. Where possible, a weighbridge check can provide more confidence, especially for a used caravan or a heavily accessorised display model. If the sums are tight, it may be cheaper to choose a different van than to force a marginal setup to work.

The finance angle is also straightforward: do the numbers before emotions take over. Use realistic assumptions to estimate repayments, then add running costs such as fuel, servicing, tyres, registration, storage and caravan park fees. A larger van may offer more comfort, but it can also increase borrowing needs, towing costs and ownership risk.

For buyers comparing new and used options, this latest safety focus is a reminder to look beyond layouts and finishes. A well-priced caravan is not automatically a good buy if it creates compliance pressure or requires unexpected upgrades. Taking time to compare finance options alongside towing suitability can help buyers choose a caravan that fits the lifestyle they want without stretching the budget beyond what is sensible.

The takeaway is simple: weight checks are not just a pre-trip task. They belong at the start of the buying journey, before loan size, deposit, term and repayment commitments are locked in.
